novelist. The following paper examines where Lawrence got his ideas, characters and such for writing the novel. Lady Chatterleys Lover First and foremost it appears as though this particular
novel is largely based on the life of Lawrence and his wife Frieda. It is also perhaps a subtle story that involves Lawrences own difficulty with his sexuality. In terms
of the story relating to the marriage he and Frieda had one author notes that, "Lady Chatterleys Lover was inspired by the long-standing affair between Frieda, Lawrences aristocratic German wife,
and an Italian peasant who eventually became her third husband; Lawrences struggle with sexual impotence; and the circumstances of his and Friedas courtship and the early years of their marriage"
(Modern Library). Lawrence had met Frieda while she was still married with three children. He married her and they experienced a marriage that was "stormy, involving violent verbal battles
culminating in cutlery-throwing and fist-fighting in the presence of friends" (New England Publishing Associates). They traveled the world and were still married when he died in 1930. In Lady
Chatterleys Lover we have the story of a man who is incapacitated from the waist down and thus will never be able to make love to his wife. This is
perhaps reflective of the life that Lawrence led in terms of having experienced homosexual relationships and never really finding any solid satisfaction with his own sexuality (New England Publishing Associates).
