but one that has moved across the country. In the following paper we provide a general overview of the D.A.R.E. program. History "It began as a joint venture
by the Police Department and the Unified School District of Los Angeles in 1983, and has spread rapidly across the country, aided by corporate sponsorships, including Arbys, Herbalife, Citibank, Kimberly-Clark,
Princess, Cruise Lines, Packard Bell, Ralphs/Food4Less, Sams Club Stores, Simon & Schuster, Warner Bros. and Western Union" (Rappleye, 1996; p. 83). In better understanding a little about the history of
the program as it involves other regions, we look at the Edwardsville Police Department. "The Edwardsville Police D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program was established in the spring of 1990,
including a total of eight schools in the Edwardsville School District #7. This included both public and private schools, with a total student involvement of approximately four hundred twenty
sixth grade students" (Anonymous The D.A.R.E. Program History, 2002; DARE-History.htm). The Edwardsville City Police Department, like other police departments across the country, "is responsible for the instruction of the D.A.R.E.
Program throughout the District and is the primary financial support for the program. Donations from private individuals, business, and civic organizations are used for the promotional materials which enhance
