In the Montessori method of
child development and education, the carrying out and completing of a cycle of activity is seen as something which aids in the development of concentration, self-discipline, and the control of
movement. For example, the practical life exercises for three-year-olds are designed to involve the kind of routine tasks which the child is accustomed to observing at home and is therefore
familiar with, and will wishing to imitate.
These might include washing hands, preparing food, putting away clothing and so on. The aim is not to learn the actual skill itself,
but rather to encourage the children to complete the cycle of activity itself. In the course of this, concentration and self-discipline will be acquired. As a result, the skill will
become easier to master. The
classroom environment is therefore designed to encourage children to exercise control over the environment and to function with an increasing level of independence. Equipment is set out on low shelves
so that it is easy to reach, and the facilities such as hand-basins and coat hooks are at a level which it is easy for children to reach.
