level for K-8 and by subject, e.g., physics, for grades 9-12 (California State Board of Education, 2006). Grade 5 standards identify multiple standards for Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences
and Investigation and Experimentation (California State Board of Education, 2006). One framework objective in Life Science for 5th graders is: "Students know how blood circulates through the heart chambers, 2
exchanged in the lungs and tissues. lungs, and body and how carbon dioxide (CO) and oxygen (O 2) are exchanged in the lungs and tissues" (CDE, 2006). The framework document
than goes on to explain how the process works (CDE, 2006). Specific performance standards were not found at this site. California does not publish specific performance standards. They do use
a School Report Card each school must submit. This document includes the standardized test scores for each grade level in each subject that is assessed. The Department, however, provides a
hyperlink to Accountability Progress Reporting (APR) at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ar/index.asp. The user can identify a school and pull up the most recent school report. Also, at this same site, the user can
