Adults will come to the classroom with a range of experiences and motivation. However, although adult learners may be initially more motivated, this does not negate the need for motivation in the classroom. When considering the different aspects of a curriculum for adult learners, there is a need to consider the way in which behaviourism has impacted the development of their learning strategies and their focus in the learning environment. The basis for this view relates to the theories of David Kolb and Alfred Bandura, who both developed theories of learning based on the Behaviourist foundation. The development of behaviourism has evolved over time, but it is represented in the way Driscoll (2000), describes the learning process as " a persisting change in performance or performance potential that results from experience and interaction with the world" (Driscoll, 2000; 3). The Behaviourists Foundational Theory A number of behavioural theorists could be applied to an understanding of adult learner populations and the development of curriculum elements for that population. David Kolb proposed the concept of learning relative to his learning cycle linked to experiential learning. David Kolb (1984) developed what has been deemed a linear processing approach to learning. Kolb (1984) asserted that experiential learning is the foundation from which individuals reflect, generalize and integrate information that not only shapes the progression of learning, but also provides a means of refining existing systems in pursuit of betterment. Utilizing the Kolb Model as a means of assessing the progression of the learning theory, then, underscores the fact that learning certain information does not reflect a static process.
