Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction Its no secret that todays correctional facilities are failing everyone: the inmates, the guards and staff, law enforcement and society in general. Instead of rehabilitating inmates and returning them to society as useful members, prisons are creating hardened criminals, often bent on payback. But until someone devises a better system, were stuck with the mess we have. This paper examines the current methods that staff members use to control and keep custody of inmates in correctional facilities. Discussion The prison environment is one of the most violent places on earth. Much of the information in the text centers on the problems facing corrections officials and in particular, the way in which the change in prisoners expectations and treatment has destroyed a fundamental mechanism in keeping order: mutual respect. At one time, prisoners and guards had at least a grudging respect for each other, based on the fact that there were programs in place to help prisoners, either psychological problems to help them understand their behavior, or programs that taught skills (Institutional security and violence, p. 284). But now those have been abandoned, mostly because there seems to be a perception that prisoners cannot be rehabilitated, and that psychologists and others who try to help are just going to be manipulated by smart "cons" will "play the game" until they get paroled. After which, in the popular view, they will return to terrorize the innocent citizens again. Its hard to say where this type of distortion ...
