In contrast, a moment of weakness in personal finance matters has caused Martha Stewarts company to suffer loss of nearly half its market capitalization. It is personal moral conviction that brings managers even to formulate a list of options in any given situation. Though they may seek to remain detached from the situation and not allow their personal values to enter into their ultimate decision, those values will be present nonetheless, if only by virtue of the fact that their moral fiber will not allow them to consider some actions as possible alternatives. The purpose here is to review the manner in which upper management establishes and pursues the culture that it wishes to establish within the organization.
