mid-20th century. This paper discusses some of the facts of this unique culture. Discussion Gandhi and his nonviolent resistance to the British finally led to Indian independence in 1947 (India,
2007). At that time, the subcontinent "was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan" (India, 2007). In 1971, another conflict between the two
countries resulted in the creation of Bangladesh from the former East Pakistan (India, 2007). India tested nuclear weapons in 1998, causing Pakistan to do the same, which resulted in significant
tension between the two countries, which lasts to this day, though "discussions and confidence-building measures have led to decreased tensions since 2002" (India, 2007). India has made "impressive gains" in
such areas as "economic investment and output," but still faces significant problems such as environment degradation, wide-spread poverty, religious strife and overpopulation (India, 2007). Government: India is a federal republic;
its chief of state is President Pratibha Patil, who took office July 25, 2007; the Vice President is Hamid Ansari, who assumed his office on August 11, 2007 (India,
2007). The head of government is the Prime Minister, in this case Manmohan Singh, who has held the post since May 22, 2004 (India, 2007). The cabinet is "appointed by
the president on the recommendation of the prime minister"; the president is elected "by an electoral college consisting of elected members of both houses of Parliament and the legislatures of
the states" (India, 2007). The president serves for five years, but there are no term limits; the next election will be held in July 2012 (India, 2007). The vice presidents
