setting. They are tales that speak of a particular time and place in history, socially and culturally. In many ways the cultures almost serve as a character in the story, laying a foundation from which the reader can more deeply understand what is taking place. The following paper examines various elements concerned with the two stories as they relate to culture/setting. Culture in Faulkner and Hawthorne In Hawthornes story the cultural placement of the story is Puritan times. Young Goodman Brown is a man on some sort of mysterious religious mission and everyone he meets connects him further to his own understanding of his religion and his culture. He is frightened of what he experiences, frightened namely because of his narrow minded Puritan thought. In Faulkners story one slowly begins to understand how Emilys culture is a very lonely culture in a time and place long gone. It is a story whose culture, in relationship to Emily, is the regal south of wealth. Emily is almost, in a sense, the royalty of the south and not allowed to be anything less. It is a lonely position and one that ultimately pushes her to the edge because it is lonely and restrictive. Each story is quite solidly set in their culture. In Hawthornes the narrator states, "Young Goodman Brown came forth at sunset into the street at Salem village; but put his head back, after crossing the threshold, to exchange a parting kiss with his young wife" (Hawthorne). There is a very distinct culture and setting presented in this simple opening line that truly lays the foundation of the story.
