from those responsible for global terrorism. The first realm in which the US differs from the rest of the world is its insistence on clinging to its devotion to
a multicultural society. At the same time, however, we seldom take the time to understand the cultures that differ so greatly from one another1. In theory at least,
in the US all religions, all ethnicities, all cultures are accepted with open arms. This presents an irresolvable dilemma, however. The terrorist entities that we are currently encountering
certainly do not delude themselves with any perceived value for the cultures that differ from them. They also dont delude themselves into placing any value in understanding those other
cultures. They, in fact, are lashing out against multiculturalism with the intent of ridding themselves of anyone that culturally differs from them.
As Urban emphasizes, "the Islamist threat is a union of like forces, fighting against perceived injustice in the name of a religion that seeks the conversion of the
world through force."2 Americans, in contrast, are apparently united on no one front. Although, as Huntington points out, our culture is still centered on "Christian religion, Protestant values
and moralism, a work ethic, the English language, British traditions of law, justice, and the limits of government power"3; our efforts to fight terrorism are in fact undermined by our
tendency to value individual opinion and belief over collective action. In some ways we are experiencing the Vietnam War all over again. As was the case with that
war, the American people that oppose our current fight against terrorism tend to distract our government from getting the job done. Even when they consider themselves non-radical and non-militant
