In other words, culture refers to the arts, institutions and sets of beliefs that are passed down from one generation to the next, and includes everything within a specific society, i.e., their manners, clothes, language, religion, rituals, etc. In the public lexicon, "culture" often refers to the manner in which various people celebrate holidays, their particular cuisines, etc. But culture means far more than this as it also dictates the way in which the world is viewed as cultural beliefs form the structure through which reality is interpreted. In relation to how people relate to culture, the analogy of fish in water comes to mind. Just as fish are probably unaware of the water in which they swim, taking it for granted, people are often unaware of the full extent of cultural influences, as these form the "water" in which human society exists. 2. American culture: The United States is a nation of immigrants. With the sole exception of Native Americans, all Americans can trace their ancestry to a different continent. This means that American culture is a mix of many different cultures. The early history of the US, particularly in regards to political and legal factors, derives largely from British origins, but the culture, as a whole, is a mix that is becoming increasingly more diverse in the present era. 3. Multicultural education: Multicultural education refers to the idea that students of diverse backgrounds should learn about each others culture, as this contributes to the cohesive functioning of a culturally diverse nation. Multicultural education should be implemented in such a fashion that understanding between diverse groups is facilitated.
