643 Culture is a reflection of societys beliefs and values. These reflections
include both the material and the nonmaterial. Often, however, there is a very real difference in our ideal culture and our actual or real culture. This is certainly
true in the US. Both material culture and nonmaterial culture are extremely diverse. Our material culture, for example, can include everything from
the types of houses that we live in to the latest technological gadget. As diverse as our material cultures is, however, our nonmaterial culture can be just as diverse.
Five broad categories of nonmaterial culture are 1. language, 2. values, 3. beliefs, 4. customs, and 5. government (Long, 2009). Within each of these categories, of course,
there are many subcategories. Our language can be characterized by composed, for example, of different dialects, accents, and even differences in what a particular word means. Our beliefs
can be reflected by our religion and science. Even our view of government and its respective roles in our lives, in turn, can vary quite radically between individuals within
the same larger culture. In the US there are sometimes what amount to very radical differences between what we consider our ideal culture
