areas to metropolitan areas over the last decades (Mundo Andino, 2009). When the Spanish took over Colombia, they brought with them language, Roman Catholicism, the feudal system and a caste
system that was preferential to European-born Whites (Mundo Andino, 2009). They also brought education, which the Catholic Church controlled for many years (Mundo Andino, 2009). The country has been in
any number of civil wars going on since the 19th century (Mundo Andino, 2009). This, too, has influenced the culture of this country. As businesses become more global
in their dealings, it is essential for businesspersons to know about and to understand the culture of the country in which they are conducting business. What is acceptable in one
culture may not be in another culture. This can lead to misunderstandings and grave behavioral errors. For instance, punctuality is important and expected in cultures such as Germany, Sweden and
America but it means little in Italy, Spain and Costa Rica (Wade, 2004). If managers are to be successful in different cultures, they need to learn about and understand their
