have been many changes created by shifts in societal norms, changes in technology and the forms of communication as well as many other factors. This can be seen if we
look at three areas of change that have created fear. Crime has always created fear, fear of being robbed, of attack or
being a victim. The changes that take place reflect the new areas of society, such as crimes using the internet. However, the man change over the last fifty years may
not only be the increase in crime levels, but may be the increase level with which they are reported. Today there are more
forms of media than ever before, news can spread quickly and is not limited and can change. This increases the perception of the occurrence of crime. One area which this
has been noted is with the crimes that are perpetrated against children. News such as abductions and attacks on children make very good news and also create emotive pictures. The
occurrence and follow up in the news is increasing as it attracts viewers or readership. The result has been increasing anxiety among parents for the safety of their children, wanting
to know where they are and who they are with. There is an increased feeling of threat, but the statistics show that although there is increased awareness of the threat
to children, the level of the threat has not increased as there are the same level of crime committed today as there were fifty years ago (Haralambos and Holborn, 2000).
