Contemporary cross-cultural counselors and psychologists realize the importance of the narrative in relation to, for example, counseling African-Americans. Counselors have also realized that the human mind responds more efficiently in a complex web of narration rather than in small bits and pieces of facts that are not coherently pieced together . It is also important to understand the culture or environment in which African-American children live and its impact upon cross-cultural counseling. To this end, Walter Fischer and George Herbert Mead have gifted counselors and psychologists with their understanding of human learning and theories of symbolic interaction, as well as the narrative theory. Many African-American families have a rich cultural history that has been passed down for generations. From their tribal affiliations hundreds of years ago in Africa, through their years of slavery and even up to today, this history has been passed down through families. For the most part the only way to relate this history from one generation through the next was through storytelling. In fact, storytelling has become known as one of the primary ways that history has been taught throughout the years. The Indian cultures, and indeed ancient cultures throughout civilization, have communicated through storytelling in lieu of a written language for thousands of years.
