offering a reaction to the assigned reading. Grimmett and Locket (2006) begin their discussion of the issues encountered in multicultural counseling by pointing out the need for all mental
health personnel to increase their skill and knowledge level relative to multicultural awareness, which is necessitated due to the increasing diversity of the American population. As indicated by these authors,
the importance of being a culturally skilled counselor lies in the fact that multicultural counseling is rooted historically in issues pertaining to social justice, as its history parallels the issues
raised during the Civil Rights movement of the 1950 and 60s (Grimmett and Locke, 2006). The authors explain the significance that the cultural orientation of a counselor has on
their practice behaviors. For example, they point out that a counselor brings his or her own "values, beliefs, attitudes and opinions" to the process of counseling; and, therefore, not to
realize the effect of this cultural background is equivalent to arguing that all clients should be treated alike and evaluated according to counselors frame of reference (Grimmett and Locke, 2006,
