responsive instruction. Our state has numerous culturally distinct groups. There are eleven federally recognized Native American tribes, for example, that currently are based in our state (Wisconsin Tribal Communities, 2008). In addition there are other non-federally recognized Native American groups and various minority populations ranging from Asiatics to Africans. Each of these cultural groups often comes replete with their own language and their own distinct way of viewing and interacting with the world. An excellent example of the way these distinctions can influence the educational outcome can be made by looking at one specific case study. For the purposes of this paper that case study will be that of a young Mexican girl who is currently attending a Wisconsin elementary school. The circumstances surrounding this childs life have combined with the inadequacies of our school system in regard to the provision of multicultural education to complicate attainment of the educational goal. Jenny attends our school because she and her parents have been flown here from Mexico City to work at a large Dairy farm. Certain staff have purported that Jenny and her family are actually in the country illegally. Regardless of whether or not that is accurate, our school has been charged with attending to Jennys educational needs. This is a complicated responsibility given that Jenny does not speak English and that only one staff member at the school speaks Spanish well enough that they can interact with the child and that the school simply cannot afford an ELL teacher.
