work among Malaysian women of Indian descent can be complicated by a number of factors. Malaysian women of Indian descent who find themselves interacting in mainstream American society stand
out for a number of reasons. Their speech code, that aspect of their behavior that is bound inextricably with the concepts of gender roles, myths, rituals, dramas and beliefs
about children, individualism, honor and integrity, are of particular interest in this regard. One of the more interesting aspects of the way that these women interact with mainstream society
is their communicative behavior. Malaysian Indian women seldom make eye contact with non-Malaysians, for example. Malaysian culture, for example, teaches that it is impolite to stare. Making
direct eye contact is interpreted as rude and disrespectful when you dont know the other person well. Philepson (1997) asserts:
"Communicative patterns and strategies are specific to culture and produce and reinforce culturally specific values".
One of the best means of exploring the communication patterns of the Malaysian women being considered is observation. Direct interview techniques can
be important as well, however, in analyzing why these women continue to abide by Indian cultural mores even once they are far removed from Indian influence. The purpose of
this paper will be to explore the factors that determine communication among Malaysian Indian women who have come here to work or go to school. A literature review will
be conducted and observations will be made for professional women in all walks of life. The information that is gleaned will be made more valuable by directly interviewing these
