the movies are a joy for fans. This paper explores some of the cultural and spiritual issues that arise in the third film, The Return of the King. Discussion Spiritual
belief: J.R.R. Tolkien was a Christian and a believer, and his theology is apparent in his books. He believes that good and evil exist; he believes in immortality; and he
believes in redemption, love, sacrifice, the beauty of friendship and the strength of the bonds among those who face adversity together. The film is full of images and scenes that
recall Christian teachings, and the signs and talismans that are used throughout it are very powerful. The opening scene sets up the basic conflict immediately: Deagol, a hobbit, finds a
golden ring at the bottom of the river. His friend Smeagol falls under the Rings spell in seconds, so much so that he murders Deagol to gain possession of the
object. The two hobbits are very close, almost brothers; in that sense, the murder of Deagol recalls the Biblical story of Cain and Abel. Smeagol is analogous to Cain; he
is his brothers murderer, and the audience is aware that the Ring is both powerful and evil. There is no compromise on Tolkiens part, or Jacksons either: evil exists and
must be fought. This is a very strong stand to take in an age of anti-heroes, when everything is seen in shades of grey and nothing is every really bad
(or good). The issue of good and evil is probably the most basic spiritual issue that humans can face. Not only is it a theme found throughout the film,
