utilizing the opinions of three very different individuals from ancient Greece. In the Old Oligarch, Platos Republic, and Pericles Funeral Oration we see this as the works details specific aspects of society or the culture, and do so in very intricate manners. Of course, Platos Republic is a far more extensive and intricate work that can be argued from many perspectives. With that knowledge in hand the following paper examines, very briefly, some of the comments made in these works mentioned, and discusses how they compare and contrast in their presentation of Greek values. The Old Oligarch In this particular work there is a very clear focus on the relationship between, and the existence of, the poor and the elite. The author notes, in one section, that "oligarchical states must abide by their alliances and their oaths. If they do not keep to the agreement, penalties can be exacted from the few who made it"." This pertains to the wealthy, the powerful, and clearly the elite. Then the author notes that, "But whenever the poor of Athens make an agreement they can lay the blame on the individual speaker or the proposer, and say to the other party that it was not present and does not approve what they know was agreed upon in full assembly; and should it be decided that this is not so, the poor have discovered a hundred excuses for not doing what they do not wish to do." In this we see an individual who is clearly on the side of the elite, arguing that they have many more responsibilities in the culture of ancient Greece, and that they somehow abide by those responsibilities.
