a dead child. Others are celebrations of heritage, as Alice Walkers "Everyday Use," which tells us of the differing perceptions two sisters have of their Native American heritage.
But the story in which both class and cultural values are most clearly illustrated is Kazuo Ishiguros restrained and spare tale "A Family Supper." The story is as simple as
possible: a son comes home to Japan from America, and has a reunion with his father and sister; his mother has died two years earlier. But from those bare
bones Ishiguro has fashioned a story of deep emotion, as well as clearly showing the reader the way in which ancient Japanese culture clashes with a modern setting. The young
man is estranged from his parents; it becomes clear that they disapproved of his plans to leave Japan and go to America, though that is never explicitly stated. What
we do learn is that there is pure samurai blood in the family, and that the mans father is very proud of that fact. This tells us almost everything
we need to know about the man: he is strict, honorable, a warrior, and has a great deal of pride and longing for a Japan that no longer exists.
Such a person would not have felt any need to leave his beloved homeland, and his sons desire to do so would have been traumatic for him. In fact,
he says that he is ready to forget that past, and adds that the boys mother too, was ready to forgive him, "upset as she was by your behavior."
That is certainly a comment meant to hurt and to try and make the young man feel ashamed for having chosen his own path. The young mans sister,
