than to expertise. A person would be trying to be culturally sensitive if they did not expect a Native American to have direct eye contact but adopting that belief
is a stereotype because it is not true of all Native Americans (Machado, 2001). In this way, cultural sensitivity can lead to a stereotype. The first thing a person
must do to develop cultural sensitivity is to examine their preconceived notions about the culture with which they are interacting. Whether we care to admit it or not, the fact
is that we all hold beliefs about other cultures that we have developed over years from experience with a few members of that culture, from reading, or from family and
friends. We begin to study any group from this mindset. We have already developed a construct for that cultural group (Machado, 2001). This is a stereotype and stereotypes act
as filters to screen out any information that does not fit that particular template (Machado, 2001). It does not matter if the stereotype is a positive, such as all Chinese
high school students are very good at math, or a negative, such as all Americans are rude, it is still a stereotype. No culture is that simple and all members
of a culture do not think and behave in the same way. Cultural constructs should be perceived as temporary or tentative thoughts and categories that will be validated or
rejected with more information and experience (Machado, 2001). It is only a possibility. Cultural sensitivity is about our own biases, values and beliefs about cultures. To be sensitive means that
we have the ability to examine our own notions and to change them. Each person must be seen as an individual within the context of the larger culture. There are
