each others lives, carrying their prejudices and value judgments along with them. Structurally, the film is intended to be a recreation of life as it unfolds in a series
of urban vignettes that reveal how racism in some form impacts upon how people perceive and relate to each other (Phillips; Seco). Urban America is an environment that lends
itself extremely well to a critical analysis of the connection that exists between culture and communication within a popular cultural context. One scene in particular is crafted in such
a way that physical stereotypes based upon race are removed but the racially based assumptions still nevertheless remain. In a scene, which takes place early in the film, it is
nighttime in an urban downtown area, where mostly professionally dressed white people are walking. The setting suggests a time of year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and people are wearing
jackets and topcoats. There are Christmas lights and snowflake decorations on light posts and a theater displays Its a Wonderful Life on the marquee, the classic Frank Capra holiday
film starring James Stewart. The night is clear as evidenced by the lack of umbrellas being carried by passersby, no raincoats or slickers being worn, and no visible puddles
on the dry sidewalk. Because of the visual cues that suggest a late fall season and based upon what people are wearing, the setting for this scene would likely
