Interpersonal communication affects practically every aspect of our lives. This is certainly true in the educational arena. Indeed, in part, interpersonal
communication affects relationship between students, students and teachers, and teachers and parents. Interpersonal communication is a critical component in educational outcome. As that arena becomes increasingly more multicultural,
however, interpersonal communication sometimes is not optimal. The intent of this paper is to document the difficulty encountered by one white middle aged teacher trying to communicate about a specific
childs educational needs with a parent who has recently immigrated to the United States from Mexico. The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
(2008) defines multicultural education as an education that "helps students to understand and appreciate cultural differences and similarities and to recognize the accomplishments of diverse ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups".
Typically multicultural education is structured to stimulate students interest in other cultures. Consequently, considerable attention is devoted to illuminating cultural characteristics such as what certain cultures eat, how
