to tolerate other people. We must accept them at the very least. However, when we are actually studying about cultures we must truly adhere to a concept known as cultural
relativity in which we understand how people are different, and accept that they are different. Because they are different does not mean that something is wrong with the way they
think, learn, or behave. Cultural relativity emphasizes this reality. The following paper examines the importance of learning and understanding cultural relativity when learning of cultures. The paper also discusses the
concept of cultural relativity when faced with issues of child development, especially in the field of education. Cultural Relativity Cultural relativity is the notion that "a culture can
only be truly elevated by its own standards and not by any common criteria. Thus, cultural relativism is a liberal and liberalizing concept in the social sciences, and is, of
course, rejected by the old conservative line" (Cultural Relativity, 2003). There are, interestingly enough, some radicals that reject the idea of cultural relativity as well. They argue against the "radical"
version: "Radical cultural relativism holds that the beliefs, values, and modes and organization of behavior of one culture can never be objectively or validly judged superior to those of another
culture. This is, of course, quite contrary to humanists and socialists of one kind or another (Marxian, Christian, etc.) who postulate a human essence that when violated by any social
structure or cultural system results in injustice - an injustice that must be properly criticized" (Cultural Relativity, 2003). Whatever the stance, cultural relativity is incredibly important when studying cultures.
