so-called "primitive" cultures of the world reflect a definitive unity between the spiritual and the material world. Such is the case for many of the cultures found in Africa
and in the diversity of indigenous cultures that exist in the Americas. A common theme among these cultures is the reflection of this unity in their oral tradition and
the ceremonies that constitute their religion. When exploring the connection between the spiritual and material world that exists in these ancient cultures it
is helpful to first turn to their oral tradition. Many of these people, after all, had no written language throughout most of their history. Consequently, they passed along
information from one generation to the next in an oral rather than a written format. This is one of their more interesting cultural practices.
There is no one holy book such as the Bible for most of these cultures. There is, however, a rich oral tradition. Many who
study this oral tradition, unfortunately, tend to lump all of these cultures stories under the classification of mythology. More correctly, oral tradition can be categorized most appropriately into three,
not one, classifications. These are "legend", "myth", and "folklore". Properly used, the term "folklore" is applied to stories which are assumed to be false. The term "myth",
on the other hand, is reserved by anthropologists and folklorists for those stories which deal with the creation of the world. The term "legend" is applied to accounts which
