By the time of the American Revolution three peoples comprised American society.
These peoples were the Europeans who had settled in these lands, the Native Americans who were its indigenous inhabitants, and the African Americans that had been brought here as slaves.
The interaction between these three broad cultural groups resulted in considerable cultural exchange. Each both took and contributed to the other. There were many losses but there
were also many gains. The Europeans who traveled the so-called New World brought with them an entirely different way of looking at the
world. They also brought many of the Old Country needs, needs that would find fulfillment in the resources of this strange new land. By the time of the
Revolutionary War these needs had transformed much of the Americas. Entire industries had grown up around these needs and whites, Native American, and blacks alike toiled in their fulfillment.
The Native Americans had taught the whites and the black newcomers to their lands about its many treasures. Not only were their
cultures tremendous varied, so too were the various regions that they called home and the knowledge they had collected as to how to live in those regions. The Native
Americans educated whites and blacks alike as to the existence and value of resources such as corn, squash and the whites in particular used that education wisely. They were
not only growing these vegetables for their own use, using the slave labor of the blacks, but were sending them and their seeds back to Europe for utilization there.
