There are many different factors that may be considered, three important ones are the relaxed attitude t time keeping, the importance of close relationships in business as well as families and the impact of the high context culture in the way communication takes place. Each can be considered in turn. Attitude to time The approach to time keeping in Brazil is very relaxed, while it is common for meeting to be arranged many weeks in advance, the time keeping for the meeting may appear to be lax when compared to Anglo-American approaches (Gottwald and Bergholz, 2004). Two different concepts of time exist; Monochronic and Polychronic, the Anglo American model is that of a monochronic approach where time is seen as singular and linear, with punctuality and good time keeping valued and sticking to schedules is important. Polychronic may be seen as the opposite, where the perception of the passing of time here may be perceived in a different manner, that of synchronic (OHara-Devereaux and Johansen, 1994). The attitude of the polychronic culture is more open ended than the monchronic and not tied to a set timetable, many task as seen as being able to be completed and it is the completion of the task that has the emphasis, not he schedule of the completion of the task (Gottwald and Bergholz, 2004). This means that business meeting should be seen as fluid, that changes made should not be seen as negative and meetings are likely to run over their allotted times.
