to eliminate the connection with ones ethnic identity in order to assimilate into the mainstream American society. They believe that this is the best way to move on, to grow,
and to find ones identity in the United States and to avoid ethnic alienation, which is a serious concern for many individuals. But, there are also those who argue that
in such a large and often chaotic society keeping ones connection to their ethnic identity is empowering and personally gratifying in relationship to ones identity. The following paper argues that
retaining ones ethnic identity is positive and often necessary for a health identity. Cultural Identity It should be understood that for some people losing a great portion of
their ethnicity is what they need in truly finding their identity and growing as a person. Some people simply want to put that ethnicity behind them and mix in with
the rest of society. This, however, is not often simple when the ethnicity is clearly not white, but through powerful assimilation many people have found ridding themselves of their identity
a very powerful tool. As is the case with any controversial or personal issue, there are many sides to the issue and one approach will not necessarily work for another
individual. As Pires and Stanton (1997) note, "Ethnic identity may vary between individuals and for the single individual over time, due to economic or political factors, family socialisation, occupational integration
or educational influences." With that in mind it is also very important for many people to retain, or even learn about, their ethnic identity in finding themselves. In the
past people who are immigrants have had to forcibly rid themselves of their cultural or ethnic identity in order to succeed and this has been aggressively passed on to the
