to Hurston. For todays African Americans, who seemed to have gained much politically and socially, a chasm between the promise of freedom and actual freedom still remains. In addition, the culture remains economically impoverished. African American women suffer the most from diseases such as AIDS, poverty and neglect, and with the recent return to gothic, or fatalist thinking, many children continue to find their main support in peer groups who rely on violence as a form of self-expression and self-empowerment. However, the African American culture has always celebrated life, survival, and the beauty of life at the same time. They have always been visionary about the duality of their existence. As Eduourd Glissant writes: "It is against this double hegemony of a History with a capital H and a Literature consecrated by the absolute power of the written sign that the peoples who until now inhabited the hidden side of the earth fought, at the same time they were fighting for food and freedom." (Powell, pp. 379(4)). The food and freedom for which African Americans fight extends from Africa to America, and is expressed by its artists in literature, paint, photography and sculpture. One such artist is photographer Jason Miccolo Johnson, who photographs the poverty and chaos confronting Blacks in America. These are exhibited in the faces of everyday people in the published Mr. People. In Mr. People, Johnson shows the everyday struggles that never change for all people. In all of his work, Johnson seeks to highlight the struggle through the contrast of dark and light, making the subjects faces the theme of the photo.
