There are of course ethical challenges that diversity brings to the table in the course of a public administrators day. In order to resolve these ethical challenges, it makes
sense to employ philosophical theories which come from the gamut of philosophers from various time periods. William Graham Sumners (1979) philosophical theories which emanates from his sociological work Folkways
is astounding. His concept of Social Darwinism says a lot for the idea that administrators should be considerate of popular opinion. In other words, he would not likely support
diversity and would justify his admonition with the survival of the fittest mentality that is peculiar to Social Darwinism. Why include various cultural perspectives when the dominant culture
is the strongest? In some ways, he has a point. In terms of government, Sumner does not believe in intervention anyway. The gist of his ideas are to leave
things alone and let nature take its course. Of course, many people disagree and contend that the right course of action is to treat everyone equally which may mean a
policy of affirmative action. One has to recognize race, and then level the playing field in order to get to that point. A student writing on this subject may want
to note that Sumner would strongly disagree with such interventionist policies. What might Kant say about this same topic? Kants ideology is centered around what is known as a
