moved to the United States from Pakistan after having conflicts with her parents over an arranged marriage and her disclosure to them that she was a lesbian. Joy works
in her uncles small, Pakistani market and is taking college extension courses. 1. What are your thoughts or feelings about "multiculturalism"? Joy stated that she didnt really
know "what multiculturalism means." I explained a definition of the term to her and she said that the United States was all about multiculturalism. She said that even
though multiculturalism is the base of the American culture, she feels that homosexuals and lesbians are outside the circle of the multiculturalism in this country. Joy laughed, and then
stated that the United States was much more accepting than Pakistan, where her parents live. She told me that she left Pakistan because her parents wanted her to agree
to an arranged marriage and that was when she told them she is a lesbian. They have not spoken since she moved to the United States. It was
interesting that Joy felt like multiculturalism was a big part of the American culture, because my personal experiences suggest differently. Being Lebanese American has been difficult and I have
felt separated from the American culture at times, even though I was born American. Joys view about homosexuality, though, goes along with my own feelings, because I do believe
that homosexuals and lesbians are marginalized because people feel threatened by them. I kept thinking that it would be easier for Joy if she had simply accepted her parents
values and entered an arranged marriage, rather than having to disconnect herself from them. If I was faced with the same challenge, Im not sure I would have had
