United States. Corporate America is the prime target for the investigation, but its role in a global world is also explored and emphasized. Affirmative action, as a predecessor of cultural
diversity programs, is also discussed and attention is paid to its controversial nature. Globalization is noted as a phenomenon that has prompted interest in diversity, but that has not really
bridged any gaps, or opened communication at all. It is argued that cultural diversity programs have failed and much has to do with the fact that institutional discrimination in corporate
America has persisted despite efforts to eradicate it. Cultural diversity in the workplace today is a real challenge. While its intent was
largely to bring harmony, it has done everything but that. Still, companies try to make things right by offering programs to help meld the various groups of people in their
companies and cater to foreign clients by learning other cultural traditions. To some extent, the government has gotten involved as well1 . Not too long ago, affirmative action was a
controversial subject. It still is debated. And while that is true, it seems that cultural diversity programs have been given lip service, but they have not achieved the goals of
providing an atmosphere that truly fosters communication. There has been a great deal of conflict over the issue of cultural diversity in corporate America2. For the current generation, the concept
of cultural diversity may present a challenge just as did affirmative action for generations in the past3 . Affirmative action was actually something to emanate from President Johnsons Great Society
