nation aspire. As with many other aspects of South African society, religious leaders have embraced the philosophy of ubuntu as a guide for accomplishing the task of embracing cultural
diversity, as this African worldview coincides with the vision that Scripture tells us God has for us, His children. In his text, God Has A Dream: A Vision of
Hope for Our Time, Archbishop Desmond Tutu asks his readers to "envision and live Gods dream" (Smith). Tutu goes on to explain that Gods dream is for everyone, the entire
human family, to live in love and peace, with justice and respect for all people. Archbishop Tutu refers to this dream as "ubuntu" (Smith). This word is taken from the
Nguni language and means "humanity," "humanness" (Von Binsbergen). The philosophy of ubuntu can be seen in the African phrase "Umntu Ngumntu Ngabantu," which means "a person is a person
through other people" (Von Binsbergen). This statement concisely defines the entire realm of sociology. We are who we are because of our relationships with others. Human beings, with rare
exceptions, choose to live and work with others. We establish customs and honor values in order to put aside personal interests in the interests of the greater whole. In so
doing, we become fully human, but that humanness is reliant on our connections with others. When these connections are good, embracing everyone, we become fully human. This is what the
ubuntu philosophy tells us, which makes it a perfect foundational concept for the purposes of accommodating cultural diversity. Ubuntu philosophy has played a major role in forging the national
