gap between White, Black, and Hispanic students. One factor that plays a role regardless of which race or ethnicity is being discussed is poverty. Poor kids just do not do
as well as wealthier kids. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that 48 percent of Black, 49 percent of Hispanic, and 36 percent of American Indian students attended schools
with the highest level of poverty (Durden, 2007). That doesnt give these students much of a chance for success. In the last several years, another proposal has been made about
African-American students and others. There is a cultural disconnect between family life and the schools culture. This essay explores cultural mismatches. Possible Cultural Disconnects Many African scholars
believe that the only way Black children will be able to participate on the global stage is if their education is completely re-conceptualized (Shockley, 2003). Called Africentric education, this approach
focuses on providing Black children with self-knowledge so that they will better be able to participate in nation-building. Children need to develop a sense of agency, which is a
sense of empowerment and a sense that they can control what is around them. The long term goal is to bring about holistic change in the African-American community (Shockley, 2003).
The culture of the typical school and of a atypical Black family are nearly at opposite ends of the scale. Black culture is circular, not linear. Thinking among Blacks is
