fa?ade. Lucy Nineteen year old Lucy has a lot to learn when she comes to America straight from the West Indies. While she never thought of herself as
poor while living in the West Indies, Lucy soon sees the things that money can buy - as well as the unhappiness it can bring. Working as an au pair
for a wealthy couple with four children, Lucy watches as the children are showered with everything they want and think they need. For someone who was immensely pleased in
her childhood to get just one pair of new shoes, Lucy is shocked at the difference between America and the West Indies. Soon she sees even more differences. From
the beginning Lucy is inundated with new things - almost more than she can imagine or take in all at once. Elevators in tall buildings, and even new underwear
are almost all brand new experiences for her. She says: "The undergarments that I wore were all new ... and as I sat in the car, twisting this way
and that ... I was reminded of how uncomfortable new can make you feel" (Kincaid PG). SURPRISING EMOTIONS Lucy thought she was ready to leave the West Indies and
would forget everything about it quickly, embracing her new and exciting life in the United States. With all of the opportunity, the money, and the never-ending supply of exciting
