a greater degree of interdependence between the worlds nations and more international transactions than ever before. This means that the transaction have to be negotiated before the trade can take
place. For small transactions this may be a simple formality, but for larger contract this may be a lengthy and drawn out process which may be complex and require effective
communication. In business it is not only the language but the whole business culture that may be different. To any globally ware
person the differences of business culture between a country such as the United States and Japan is immediately apparent due to the wide perception of the different cultures. For Europe
it is also recognised there are differences, but they are not seen as so great (Bright, 1999). It is at the negation stage
where cultural difference may become apparent. These may be due to social pressures, religious expectations or just the evolution of different meaning from varying phrases or actions.
The differences between some countries may appear to be greater than others, for example the strict formality and attention to honour required when dealing
with the Japanese is not the correct approach for the less formal and more tactile Italian culture. These may appear to be two extremes but there are many other more
common cultural aspects which need to be recognised in order to prevent giving offence and preventing a satisfactory conclusion to negations. II. Language
