the 1920s was a different place than it had been just a few years before. We had played a personal role in World War I in Europe. American
men and women that had been recruited into serve in Europe either in the military or in civilian support roles brought back experiences that few had had prior to their
time in Europe. These experiences included, of course, vivid memories of the horrors of war but they also included vivid memories of European culture and entertainment. When these
individuals came back home they began to recreate many of those experiences on American soil. The roaring twenties in the U.S. however were hardly a carbon copy of European
culture. Instead they are characterized by numerous unique developments. Of the more interesting of these is jazz music and the culture that evolved around it.
Post World War I was characterized by a dark time in American history. The country was submerged in the Great Depression and people were desperate
for any type of escape from the desperate circumstances of their lives. During the years preceding the Depression the whole nation was quickly transitioning from an agrarian lifestyle to
one which centered around the cities. Lounges became favored places of entertainment for men and women alike. Willey (2002) notes that the 1920s had also marked the beginning
of what is referred to as modernism, a time when the antiquated standards of inequality were being:
"questioned in post-Victorian terms. Amid the jazz age, emerged the flapper; a woman who danced, smoked, drank, and held more liberal views of sexuality".
