women, or if they maintain any semblance of independence apart from their gender oppressed existence. II. FINDINGS Through the combination of books, articles and Web sites, information was collected
that illustrated just how significant patriarchal control is when it comes to the cultural development of Vietnamese women. Women in a repressive, male chauvinistic society must do what they
have to in order to survive. The lives of Vietnamese women were originally designed by men under religious and scientific assumptions that served to guide every part of a
womans life, including her sexuality, mannerisms, physical appearance and education, along with her role in society. These designed programs of centuries ago served not only to control the female
gender but also to block entrance for women in many social areas (Nelson, 1999). Indeed, the patriarchal society had perpetually rendered the majority of them helpless to a life
of nothing other than self-sacrifice for their homes and families. For Vietnamese women, the areas of education, literature and religion have long histories
of restraint through design of typical womans role; the effects of these designs have been so well entrenched that they automatically apply to other areas of public life, as well.
