represent a very distinct segment of this countrys population. On the one hand, Latinos/Hispanics are a cohesive cultural group. On the other hand, however, there is considerable diversity
within that large cultural classification. Never-the-less, Latinos/Hispanics have more in common than they have differences. This is particularly true when compared to the dominant white Anglo Saxon culture
that predominates in the United States. There are, in fact, five specific factors justify the perception of these people as one cultural group when they reside in the
United States. These are 1. the perception of the dominant culture within which these people exist, 2. the perception of the Latinos/Hispanics themselves that they are different
from the dominant culture, 3. their common language, 4. It might be contended that the first and most prominent factor in delineating a cultural groups is
that groups distinction within or against another cultural group. It can be posited, therefore, that because the mainstream US culture tends to lump Latino and Hispanic immigrants into one
cultural group then they are in fact a member of that larger group. This has happened throughout history, in fact, with a multitude of cultural groups. Consider, for
example, the tendency of the dominant US culture to lump all people of Asian heritage into once cultural group. Because the dominant group relates to the lesser group in
a certain manner this presents differences in terms of the lives that these people live while here in the US. They themselves, in fact, perceive other Latinos/Hispanics as being more
like them than is the dominant Anglo Saxon US culture. This presents the second factor that determines their cultural cohesiveness. At the same time, of course, these people
