Within the context of Muslim society, women are often subjected to a variety of abuses, both physical and psychological. Sadly, nowhere is this form of abuse more common than within the context of the womans own family, stemming from her father and husband. This cultural practice of abuse is predicated on a mistaken interpretation of the Koran which asserts that the obedience of women must be maintained (by force if necessary), by men. This authoritarian approach to gender relations is reinforced not just by the misinterpretation of the Koran, but also by various cultural forces including the common existence of violent patriarchal political structures within predominately Islamic nations. By examining such tendencies, however, several possibilities for improvement, even within Muslim society, present themselves. Certainly, the issue of mistreatment of women in Muslim society has only grown over the last century, but it has only come to the forefront of mainstream attention during the last decade or so. Consequently, raw numbers concerning the frequency and incidence of abuse of Muslim women are only available as of recent. That said, the numbers that are available are quite shocking, and leave no doubt as to the presence of a severe cultural problem that undermines the societal position of women via a conflation of psychological, social, and often physical abuses. Statistical measurements of the incidence of abuse against women has revealed a significantly higher incidence in Muslim communities than in predominately non-Muslim societies such as the United States.
