and has become an important part of general healthcare practice. The basic concept is to be "respectful, appreciative, and sensitive to the values, beliefs, lifeways..., practices, and problem-solving strategies of
a patients culture" (Campinha-Bacote, 2002, p183). While this is important in all health settings, it may be argued that a particularly sensitive area is healthcare provided in the patients own
home, where the patient, friends and family may all be present in the environment. As the provision of healthcare in this environment is often undertaken with the aim of aiding
and supporting the patients independence and ability to remain in their own home; a practice which is known to have positive effects on healthcare, the requirement for the patient to
feel comfortable and treated with respect is a primary concern. This important issue has received great attention, including assessment of how cultural competence can be developed, and is supported with
a number frameworks organizations can use in order to ensure that culturally sensitive care is provocative, including some mandatory frameworks such as CLAS which is mandatory for all organizations which
receive government funding (OMH, 2001). This paper will consider why cultural competence is important in nursing, focusing on the provision of home nursing services, look at what it is and
consider the way in which a particular organization may be compliant with a general framework. The importance of cultural competence has seen increased interest over the last decade, as
awareness regarding the level of diversity in the US population has increased. According to the 2000 U.S. Census in excess of 30% of the population is made up of minorities
other than non-Hispanic white people (Suh, 2004). This equates to almost one in three patients in the US likely to perceive themselves as being in a minority group (Suh, 2004).
