African American sports figures who played an important part in the history of sports in the nation, and the world, it was Muhammad Ali who realy stood up and stood
out for a number of reasons. Because of this he is perhaps the perfect example of how an individual can possess cultural capital, something that can well be translated into
monetary perspectives. The following paper examines and defines cultural capital and then examines how Muhammad Ali utilized his cultural capital. Cultural Capital: Muhammad Ali
In a work by Michael Dyson a focus is put on Michael Jordan. In the case of Michael Jordan it seems likely that his success would not
have existed in the level it did, or does, without the prior existence of Muhammad Ali. Dyson focuses a great deal on the reality of cultural capital and as such
his discussion of Jordan helps to provide illustrations and a definition. He indicates that Jordan and Jordans "shrewd handlers have successfully produced, packaged, marketed, and distributed his image and commodified
his symbolic worth, transforming cultural capital into cash, influence, prestige, status, and wealth" (Dyson, 2006). What this tells us is that cultural
capital can be made into monetary wealth but one must also understand that cultural capital is not necessarily only involved with actual money. Cultural capital is reliant on the popularity
of an individual, and how powerful that image or individual is in the public. Jordan is a good example, as is Ali in these regards because their cultural image influenced
and encouraged others. Through making a difference, giving hope, being likeable and essentially a hero such people create cultural capital that can be used in many ways, much like money.
