as increasing inaccurate when making social assessments. Traditionally blue collar or working class jobs may provide a family with a higher disposable income than a more traditional white collar or
middle class job and result lifestyle. The boundaries are becoming blurred and the perceptions on how class is formed needs to be reconsidered. To this end the theories of Pierre
Bourdieu and his colleagues at the Centre for European Sociology and the theories of different forms of capital, the role of education and the way in which achievement is
gained. In Bourdieus work, the idea of capital is explored and taken beyond the economic boundaries (Bourdieu and de Saint-Martin, 1974). It may be argued that there are commonalities
between the ideas of Marxism and those of Bourdieu. There is an emphasis on the different forms of capital, including material exchanges that encompass both immaterial and non economic capital
types, in other words, cultural and symbolic. It is worth noting that it is argued the different forms of capital can be used and either converted or exchanged into other
forms of capital. It was also argued that due to the current structures in society the distribution of the different types of capital may be seen as a inherent representation
of the modern world. It is interesting to note that in the ideas of culture Bourdieu does not claim that the higher the social class the better the culture,
therefore an upper class culture is not superior to that of working class cultures, only different. Failures that are classified as class related, such as higher crime rates associated with
working class cultures, is not the result of culture, but the failures of the educational system which is prone to reflect whatever the dominant social classes are with an inherent
