Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction A great many traits go to make up a personality, including cultural background. This paper is a summary of the traits comprising an individual. Discussion The term "culture" is still not well understood, but is generally thought of as being a group of people in a defined physical region, who share a number of things in common, in particular language and beliefs. Todays world is unsettled and violent, so its more important than ever that cultures respect each other: "Greater understanding of the ways in which traditional cultures protect the well-being of their people would illuminate the common foundation of human dignity" (Ayton-Shenker, 1995). Cultural diversity is also important with regard to schools, since it appears that young people who are from other cultures, particularly minorities, may not "obtain the education necessary for full participation in the economic and civic life of the country" (Bowman, 1994). Its important therefore for everyone to understand that all people have qualities that are special and that everyone should be accorded equal treatment and respect, so that all can succeed. With that in mind, its also important to recognize that many different things influence a persons development, with the influence of their parents probably being the single most important factor in early development. Later, peers become very important. As we grow and develop, certain traits become apparent, and sometimes they surprise us; people often say things like "I didnt know I had it in me."
