Lesson I: The Meaning of Myths in Their Cultures and For Us Myths are often called a cultural phenomenon, because they impact all levels of culture. While different myths may be popular among different classes or groups of people, the fact remains that all individuals at levels of society and at all socio-economic ranks are touched on some level by the power and prevalence of myth. From cradle to grave, all cultures are rife with myth, and tend to prescribe it a great deal of importance. So, what does it mean for a culture that myth plays an important role within it? In order to determine that, it is critical to make an assessment of what functions myth plays within a given culture. Like most topics regarding mythology, there are a variety of perspectives on this matter. One of the most widely argued, however, is the four-fold view of Joseph Campbell, who holds that myths occupy not just one but four vital cultural functions. The first of those functions is the "mystical function", which attempts to relate the fundamental inscrutability of the universe from the human perspective, the sheer scope and size of the universe, and the huge number of things well simply never know (Doherty, 2010). The section of those functions is the "cosmological function". In this sense, a myth serves the cultural function of attempt to explain some natural feature regarding the shape and nature of the universe (Doherty, 2010).
