Introduction Constantine, Anderson, Berkel, Caldwell and Utseys (2005) research study, entitled Examining the Cultural Adjustment Experiences of African International College Students: A Qualitative Analysis, relates the struggles that
are experienced by this population when transitioning into American colleges and universities. These researchers consider the impacts of this transition on the views of foreign students, and reflect upon
concepts like coping, student adjustment, acculturation, cultural differences, racial biases and access to counseling services. The authors begin by introducing the topic and the overall "problem" represented in their study.
Constantine et al (2005) report that between 2000-2001, there were more than 30,000 students in American college and university from the countries of Africa. The authors reflect upon
the fact that there are a multitude of other international students also in American colleges and universities, and that African students make up one of the least represented groups in
terms of seeking mental health services. At the same time, this population is growing, especially from countries like Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana, determining a change in the need to
address the cultural adjustment of this population. Review of Literature The researchers provide a review of literature as a component of their introduction to this topic,
with a focus on studies that relate problems of acculturation, cultural adjustment and counseling in higher education. These studies include those by Pedersen (1991) and Winkelman (1994). Initially,
the authors consider the factors that relate to cultural adjustment problems, including unfamiliarity with American culture, misconceptions about American culture and responsive cultural adjustment issues like alienation and discrimination.
In understanding this study, there are some factors that are not explicitly defined, and clarification on these points is important in addressing the overall problem outlined in the study.
