U.S. policies regarding Cuban immigration are among the more controversial topics of domestic affairs. At the center of these policies is the Cuban Adjustment Act, an Act that defines the specifics of how Cubans can be admitted to the U.S. The January 5, 2006 removal and subsequent deportation of fifteen Cuban refugees from an isolated section of unused bridge that had been severed from land at each end illustrates just how ludicrous our Cuban immigration policies have been. These "wet foot/dry foot" policies require that a refugee reach dry land in order to be granted admission to the U.S. as a legal immigrant. Evidently bridge sections that were previously connected to dry land do not qualify under our Cuban immigration policies. This is just one example of how flawed the Cuban Adjustment Act really is. The Act is flawed in many other regards as well and, as will be discussed below, those flaws relate to the historical connotation in which this Act was created. That historical connotation, however is far removed from our initial ideology regarding immigration. We have, in fact, moved far beyond the ideology we once cherished, the ideology we so identified with that it was engraved into the base of the Statue of Liberty during the early twentieth century, the ideology of: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" Emma Lazarus Immigration policy, however, has not always been ideological.
