floating in an inner tube. It was a miracle that he was alive and while that seemed to be an appropriate Thanksgiving Day story, the legal and political battle that
would ensue was not even a fleeting thought as the American people digested their turkey dinners. The boy was a Cuban refugee named Elian Gonzalez. "Elian" soon became
a household name and stories became numerous concerning the fate of the small child. Many thought the boy should be with his dad and to that sentiment some would tell
horrible stories about Cuba. If Elian did anything, he certainly brought the issues surrounding Cuban life to the forefront. And while today, by some accounts, there does seem to be
problems in the nation, it is likely nothing like the conditions that existed about a century ago. Cubas independence, and existence and prosperity, is something that is celebrated today, despite
its poor reputation. And while the nation is criticized in light of the attention recently focused on it, the nation was also highlighted by visitors who saw it as a
peaceful, loving place. No, Cuba is not free in the sense that Americans embrace, but Cuba has a certain mentality that sprung from its revolution a century ago, and that
zest that embraces many of the people is alive today. Still, the country has its share of problems and one of those is issues pertinent to race. Of course, Cuba
is not alone in possessing a poor racial climate. In a relatively recent work, Helg (1995) examined the nation of Cuba between 1886 and 1912 and what led up to
the rise and fall of the Partido Independiente de Color en Cuba. Above all, the work is a book about race more than it is about the history of Cuba.
