it being realistic, elements of cruelty and kindness involving various characters. The following paper examines and analyzes elements of cruelty and kindness in Steinbecks novel. Cruelty and Kindness: Of
Mice and Men Steinbecks novel, like many of his works, deals with common people who are farm workers, ranchers, and drifters seeking work and a sense of stability in a
nation that was experiencing the Great Depression. It was a time in Americas history wherein many people found themselves displaced because they were farmers, or worked on farms. With the
Great Depression, and the Dust Bowl, many farms in the nation were abandoned due to the lack of growing possibilities. The soil had been stripped and people became drifters seeking
jobs, and a hope for the future. They were also people, simple people, who dreamed of having a place of their own, a little farm or plot of land, where
they could survive without constantly moving and seeking work. This is a very common theme in the work of Steinbeck and this is one of the most powerful of his
novels in that focus. In this particular novel many of the characters are drifters, seeking whatever work they can on one ranch
or farm or another. They would pick fruit, harvest whatever foods a farmer was growing, and essentially work for food and a place to stay, and possibly, or hopefully, a
little cash. The people would move from one place to another, walking in most cases, simply asking any farm or ranch they came upon if there was any work available.
